Self-Care: What You Need to Know

Stress and anxiety are incredibly destructive when it comes to your health. How can you avoid getting stressed or anxious? You can make sure to integrate proper self-care into your life.

What is self-care? Self-care can be defined as care of the self without medical and/or other professional consultation. Now, we are not saying it’s not important to go to the doctor or to therapy or wherever you need to go. However, it is incredibly important that you practice regular self-care in addition to those things.

So how can we implement more self-care into our daily routine? Well, in order to do this, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

1. Self-care is different for everyone.

Some people will tell you you are not taking care of yourself unless you are going to yoga every day. Some people will say that the only way to work on self-care is to treat yourself with a day of retail therapy and ice cream. The point is self-care is different for every person. For some people, it may look like daily pilates or meditation. For others, it may look like having lunch with a friend. The point is that you need to find what works best for you.

2. Find something you can do every day.

The thing about self-care is that it’s more effective if you can do it daily. So buying yourself some ice cream may be helpful, but you don’t want to do that every day. Maybe you are someone who feels better after playing a round of golf, but most people can’t do that every day. Find something that you can do every day, whether it’s a luxurious bath after work, listening to your favorite music, or going for a walk on your favorite trail.

3. A little daily self-care is better than a big self-care week every six months.

Yes, it’s nice to go on vacation or to go to a retreat, but given the choice between one relaxing beach vacation a year or daily meditation to help you relax, I’d choose the daily meditation. Besides, you can always still go on that beach trip even if you are practicing self-care every day.

Self-care is important to everyone’s sense of health and wellness. So you need to find a self-care practice that works for you so you can start to see the benefits.
